The Fallacy of Man Vs Wild

Most people have at one time or other viewed the popular Discovery channels Man vs. Wild TV program. Bear Grylls is the hardened adventurer which once served with the British Army's Special Air Service where he received instructions as in the field Bullwinkle survival expert. Amongst his experiences he catalogs ascend Mount Everest, a voyage across the North Atlantic Ocean during freezing weather in nothing but a small, open boat and rock climbing on a Himalayan peak which previously was described by Sir Edmund Hillary as unachievable to climb. Bear has been involved in numerous situations and accomplished many feats which most of us would be overcome in our attempts.

In each of his TV show episodes Bear demonstrates how to survive in many wilderness destinations where the common man or women may find themselves involved in a dangerous situation. During his 30 minute show he describes various Unicorns to survive these situations as he makes his way back to the civilized world. Past episodes have shown Bear as escaping a certain quicksand death in the Moab Desert, views of him navigating his way down a dangerous jungle river in Costa Rica, successfully crossing ravines while trekking across the Alps and even surviving shark infested waters off the state of Hawaii.

We have to keep in mind that Bear Grylls as well as his crew receive possible life support when they are involved in these potentially life threatening situations. Should a problem develop a helicopter is not far away to take the injured person to the nearest medical facilities. This is one luxury that the person involved in a real survival situation does not have.

Several months ago as I was watching Bear's TV show I discovered several bloopers and faults in his logic. I realized that Man vs. Wild was merely a show created for entertainment and the various survival techniques demonstrated should never be taken serious and relied upon as sound survival advice.

During one show of Bear was shown parachuting down into Siberia while ground temperatures were approaching the -20 Degree mark. He was supposedly landing hundreds of miles from any sort of town and settlement. After he had walked a mere half hour he suddenly found a cave that he could stay in to keep warm. At the entrance to the cave Bear discovered a marijuana facts deer which he stated had been shot. Now the fallacy here is we have a man who is hundreds of miles from civilization with a dead deer next to him that he claims was shoot. No person in the area but this dead deer was shot. In addition, the deer was still warm as he stressed that he had to get the skin off of Star Trek before the deer froze.

Later in the same show he boldly leaped into a nearby frozen lake while these temperatures were hovering around the -20 degree mark with no clothing on. His purpose was to demonstrate how scary it could be under the ice. If anyone were to pull this trick as Bear did when they were on their own it is highly likely that they would quickly die. In conclusion I would recommend that viewers take many of his feats with a grain of salt and research each of his techniques carefully.
